Gideon’s Daughter (founded by married couple Brad and Lisa Petit) is best described as an Experimental Americana group out of Wenatchee, WA. They list their influences as Cyndi Lauper, Bon Iver, The Civil Wars, Radiohead, The Beatles, Dave Brubeck, and Phish. With those influences how could you not take a listen? This thoughtfully artistic group is worth it. Read on…
The song “Sargasso Sea” is about a tumultuous relationship between two lovers and their struggle to come to terms with how much damage they’ve inflicted on each other. The song is well written and has a video professionally produced with actors. And I LOVE IT! Very creative both musically and visually. Most of the time when I see a 7 minute song I get impatient…not so with this one.
The band prides themselves on their improvisational performances. I would love to see them live as I can’t put my finger on any group they sound anything like. The blend of male and female vocals over the organ and acoustic guitar are splendid. Lisa’s voice is perfectly placed throughout the song and the guitar/uke parts compliment their voices together, especially in the chorus sections.
The band has an album out called Steel Octopus Arms and there are many other great songs beyond “Sargasso Sea.” Their immediate plan is to tour the west coast next summer and eventually tour some of the east coast states as well during the Fall of 2017. They are currently collaborating and writing new material and will be entering the studio again sometime near future.
Another notable tune worth listening to is “Old Barn” – Now this tune is where their music goes a little country. The twangy elements shine through both in the guitars and the vocals. Once again, the mix of the two voices, male and female, on top of each other makes for some easy and enjoyable listening. One downside about this song is I think it could be a little meatier…I mean this sonically. It’s a touch thin and sounds a little under-mastered. Otherwise, excellent tune I’m sure you will enjoy!
“Never Gonna Leave” you comes out rockin’ and shows the jam talents of the band including full band. I have enjoyed the tunes so far but this one is by far my favorite. I personally lean towards more upbeat and energetic tunes so this is right up my alley. High energy country rock is the best I can describe it. The acoustic cars and ukelele still shine through and carry the hooks, but with the addition of the drums takes this tune to the next level for me!
Gideon’s Daughter has been fun to listen to. Great songs, excellent musicianship and overall just a great project. I can’t wait to hear more from them and hope to see their experimental live show someday! They claim that they are “hardcore fans of their fans” and love having a personal relationship with each and every one. So, get in touch with this group and start connecting!
