Jeff Michaels And His Townie Girl

Jeff Michaels

There truly is nothing better than feel good piano rock in the realm of Ben Folds, Elton John, Billy Joel, etc. Enter Jeff Michaels, all of the above with a creative twist. When I started listening to Jeff a few weeks ago I was caught up in the hook in the first song “High School Dreams” with the catchy, “Whoa whoa whoooa.” Brilliant! The simple and short intro made me stop and listen with intent to be greeted to lyrics that I can relate to whole heartedly, “Spent a long time playin’ in a rock & roll band, pumpin’ on the ivories and doin’ the best I can.” WHOA WHOA! That sums up the story of my life as a professional piano player. I was hooked on Jeff Michaels immediately.

The title track “Townie Girls” has a very strong REM overtone to me which is a great thing. It’s interesting, if you visit Jeff’s website you’ll be surprised to learn that you’ve probably heard his music before. Jeff’s dedication to the independent music scene has been a lifelong cause and several of his songs have been licensed to over a dozen television shows, appearing in episodes of The Real World and Teen Moms (MTV) and the T.O. Show (VH1). Jeff was also a member of pop band Luce, whose music appeared on major motion picture soundtracks for How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey) and 13 Going on 30 (Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Andy Serkis)! Now that’s a resume. Next time you’re watching your favorite cable TV show think about how the indie music industry is supplying a ton of the music they use. That’s Jeff!

Jeff’s voice is amazing as he slides back and forth between a smooth focused tone and a Bob Dylan & Beatles-esque delivery of certain phrases. His willingness to use his music to commentate on some of society’s most difficult issues has helped Jeff carve out a dedicated fan base. His song advocating equal rights, Same F’ing Sun, resulted in overwhelming fan support and attention from gay activist groups.

For me, highlights of this album include the first track I already mentioned and the song you can view in the video “Same F’ing Sun.” “Same Sun” is an instant classic. The arrangement is perfect, the vocals are more than perfect and the message is timeless.

Jeff Michaels has been a breath of fresh air for me as not only a professional musician but also as an everyday music lover and listener. Got get yourself some Jeff Michaels!!
