Radio Drive – She Colors My World – Review

Radio Drive - She Colors My WorldRadio Drive has been around for years now, mainly pushed by a force named Kevin Gullickson. We’ve reviewed his music before and he was also a very early featured artist on our glorious website that has been running for 3 years now! I’ve always been a huge fan of Kevin’s music as Radio Drive and I’m about to tell you why.

Radio Drive – She Colors My World

Like I mentioned before, Kevin has been populating the indie music world with a consistent flow of tunes for years. Fans of The Beatles are going to love his new cover of “Hey Bulldog” which I’ll get to in a bit. Y’all can read up on the history of Radio Drive by a simple google search so I’m going to get right to it.

On the 5th album released by Kevin Gullickson as Radio Drive, “A New Start” really sticks out to me. The delay in the guitar and the groove laid down by the bass and drums are head boppingly groovy! I listen to tons of indie music and Radio Drive is at the top of the heap when it comes to songwriting quality and interesting chord progressions. Also, Kevin writes from the heart which makes it an intimate experience. In particular I love the bridge sections of “A New Start.” The guitar solo is somewhat flashy but not overplayed at all and the delay is rhythmically tight as hell.

“Sweet Thing” is a slower ballad type jig. Kevin’s signature guitar sound starts out in the background supported by some warm keyboards. The chord progression in this one isn’t all that original, but it does the trick to make a unique song. Kevin is a really great arranger that’s for sure! I’m never bored listening to his music because he keeps even the simplest of movements interesting by arranging them in ways that aren’t run of the mill. This is much harder than it sounds to pull it off consistently.

Ok, time for my favorite on the album! Kevin put a cover of The Beatle’s “Hey Bulldog” and it really sounds great! The intro in particular, and in fact the entire tune provides probably the best and most interesting production I’ve heard come from Radio Drive. Having said that, there is one thing sonically that bothers me about this project and it’s the drums. I’m not sure if they’re real but they seem a little over processed for my taste. I noticed that in quite a few of the tunes, they just don’t stand out and have the “meat” like they should. Just my little humble opinion. Otherwise, this is a great new project from Radio Drive that I hope you check out and enjoy!

I’m curious to know what YOU think about Radio Drive! Let me know! Also, hit up Kevin Gullickson on social media and let him know that you heard his music here first on Indie Music Plus! As always, thank you for reading and continuing to support indie music of all genres!
