Cayla Brooke – Featured Artist

Cayla Brooke - Featured ArtistCayla Brooke is a singer/songwriter from Vancouver, Canada. We’ve reviewed her music on the website before and she stood out to me so much that I decided to ask her to be a featured artist. She was kind enough to join us on our weekly show Indie Music Live (episode 172).

Cayla Brooke – Featured Artist

Cayla has a powerhouse vocal that is rarely equaled on the indie music stage. She proclaims herself as “the jazz-rock blue jean in heals vocal powerhouse from Vancouver”. If you missed our review of her song “Plush Red Chair” make sure to check it out here. That tune is a jazz song, but the song we listened to on the show is completely different. She says she wrote it about her x-husband and it’s really about just saying it’s time to move on. It’s called “It’s Over.” Check out the video below to hear it. I would say she ventures into the wonderful world of blues rock/country. What do you think?

In the Deeper w/ Dave segment, Dave explores some references that helped form Cayla’s style. Dave compares her to Anne Wilson of Heart and Dianna Krall, and Cayla mentions that people also bring up Adele frequently. Basically, this girl can sing…and not just one genre! That’s HUGE for a vocalist that strives to be a professional. Cayla says she is comfortable with many genres yet her soulfulness always shines through.

One of Cayla’s biggest influences is a singer named Eva Cassidy, as she mentions in her personal bio. Eva died when she was 33 in 1998 and Cayla was mesmerized by her after being referred by her massage therapist. And as they say, the rest is history.
