Forest Robots – Inevitable

Forest Robots - InevitableEver heard of Forest Robots ((Francisco Dominguez)? We have. We’ve also reviewed his music before here. Overall I think the sound of Forest Robots is right up my alley. He’s really quite good at creating soundscapes and setting the mood. Looking for some mellow vibes to add to your playlist? This is it. Over the past few years he has put out two albums and he has recently released a stand-alone single called “Inevitable” and I’m going to tell you my thoughts.

Forest Robots – Inevitable

In the information I received to review this new single, Francisco named some influences such as My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins so immediately I was interested! Both Dave and I have referred to these bands often in our live critiques with past bands. After listening to the song I definitely hear some of those influences in there, but it certainly has a much more heaving electronic vibe. I really like the chill vibe of this tune. I would say it has more of a Depeche Mode feel.  The overall soundscape is quite impressive. Personally, I think it would benefit from some more variety in the way of a few different chords here and there and possibly a breakdown or two.

Now, my main issues with “Inevitable” are the style of vocals. Honestly, they don’t quite match the music for me. The melody is a bit drab, more of a spoken word, and I think detracts somewhat from the beautiful music behind it. Perhaps if there were some more production on the vox (i.e. crazy effects) or maybe even having a female sing harmonies may work better for me personally. Take for instance the aforementioned Cocteau Twins – the vocal harmonies are truly hypnotic and draw the listener in even more, and it becomes a seamless part of the experience. Based on Francisco’s growth thus far, I believe he will evolve his sound to a more synergistic vocal/music blend.

Ending on a higher note, Forest Robots IS making some cool music and I hope he doesn’t stop anytime soon. It’s been fun to watch him “grow up” over the past few years and I am looking forward to seeing what he has for us in the future. He has two other full albums available for purchase.
