Metafrost – I Was King For A Day – Review

MetafrostMetafrost is an electronic musician based in Detroit, MI. He’s a multimedia artist that creates his own fine art, animations, and music. His musical background includes classical, jazz, and computer generation. He’s recently released a new project called I Was King For A Day and I’m going to give you my thoughts.

Metafrost – I Was King For A Day

First off, most of this project is perfect for “background” or “bed” music for parties, videos, etc. For example, reading a book, having a drink, or browsing the internet? This album is perfect to enhance the atmosphere. On my first listen the jazz and classical elements came out right away. For example in the title track, “I Was King For A Day” I can hear a wash of sounds – trumpets, saxes, and all the other sounds associated with a big band. These horns are laid over the top of a smooth jazz electronic beat. It’s a cool sound but in a way, it’s almost too much. In some spots, it sounds as if it’s 2 different tracks being played together. I’m not sure if this is intentional to get across a certain vibe, but in some instances the harmonies (and the groove) are very dissonant.

In contrast to the title track “Some Kind Of Way” is much easier to digest. Some of the harmonies are still pretty dissonant, but the groove carries the song a little better. I do enjoy the atmospheres that Metafrost creates. It’s like I’m at the smokey jazz club no matter where I actually am currently lol. In this track, the bass line holds it together throughout and gives the song a little more structure. Again, he is creating a great background music vibe. I could hear almost all of the Metafrost tracks on an Electrojazz Spotify playlist.

Ok, so with “When I Met You” I’m starting to notice a trend here. I like the vibe for sure. In fact, in the first few bars of the song there is a killer keyboard track. This is one of my top 2 favorite tracks on the album. It’s hard to tell which tracks are actually being played and created from scratch and which ones are pre-made samples. If I had to guess I would say that most of the music that Metafrost makes is by taking pre-made tracks and splicing them together. I’m not 100% sure but that’s my guess. Is that a bad thing? Well, it all depends on the listener. I’m not one to judge. All I’m here to do is tell you my thoughts on the finished project.

“Galactic Funk”, my other favorite track on the album, provides a head-bopping groove and a melodic hook that keeps me, as a musician and a listener, interested. Unfortunately, it’s a little on the shorter side than the other tunes. I think it should be longer!

So, overall I Was King For A Day is a solid quality project from the artist Metafrost. Those that are into electro-jazz and groove music and use it in particular as background or to study to will love it. If you like Metafrost make sure to check him out and support his ventures!
