Folk, Country, Alternative…all words that can be used to describe the music of GoLian. Apparently Paul took a 30 year break from music. I must admit, it’s good to have him back. He brings a fresh yet seasoned perspective to the alternative/indie scene of today. When I hear his music I instantly think 1960’s folk in the way of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, etc. The cool thing is that he’s currently writing and releasing this new music and there’s nothing old about it!
“Hey You” is a prime example of this eclectic blend. Beatlesque in nature, Paul delivers a gem with this happy go lucky sounding tune. Personally I think the vocals are mixed a bit high and the timing gets a bit loose, but I love the hooks and the harmonies so much I’m willing to look past that and enjoy the song for what it is. The “oh oh oh oh’s” are extremely catchy and get me singing every time.
“Girl” is a tune similar to the last one, but only in the sense that it’s catchy and fun to listen to. Musically it’s quite different. Sporting a guitar solo in the middle and a more prominent southern Cali vibe throughout, I sense a hit in the making if remixed. The production quality is ok, nothing super special, but it has a certain vintage sound to it that I enjoy. It almost sounds like it was recorded in the ’60s or ’70s with some flavor added in present day.
“Feels Like” has more of a Country Western vibe to it with a shuffle beat and southern sounding guitars. Paul’s sound is definitely consistent throughout. The catchy “Feeeeeels like” chorus in this tune is right in line with his other songs with similar hooks such as “Hey You”. I’d say that Paul is getting comfortable in his musical shoes so to speak rather quickly.
