The Forks – Round The Bend

The ForksThe Forks are Donovan Thorimbert and Hank Gimby. They’re a couple of dudes that are just “cruising down the Folky-Rock highway in a banj-o-mobile” as their Facebook page states. If you like the banjo and the genres of music that comes with it then stay tuned, you may like these guys!

The Forks – Round The Bend

One of the things that stands out to me about this duo is their authenticity. They have a tight sound and know how to groove for sure. When I say “groove” I obviously don’t mean in a funky¬†way, but more in the sense that they play really well together and sit in their respective pockets perfectly. Listen to their track “One Degree” and you will instantly know what I am talking about.

Donavan and Hank are obviously great musicians and I am enjoying their music, but after a bit I have to say it starts to sound somewhat predictable. Maybe it’s the musician in the me, but some of the changes sound extremely “familiar” and I could use a little more variety in parts.

The guys are based in Montreal and recently released their EP Round the Bend on May 9, 2019. Having the chance to release their first recordings is exciting for the guys since they have been carrying their original repertoire for years, and until recently were exclusively a live act. “Silly Monkey Brains” is probably my favorite tune out of the three they sent for me to check out. It’s simple, it’s quirky, it’s fun. I find myself singing it from time to time throughout listening and getting familiar with their tunes.

I think “Tall Grass” is the most intricate tune on the EP. It almost has a Charlie Daniels “Devil Went Down To Georgia” vibe. I especially like the chorus which repeats “La la, la la la” (or lie lie…not sure exactly what he’s saying lol). Either way, it’s catchy and easy to sing along with. One last note artistically about “Tall Grass” is that the end chord changes to major. I enjoy little trinkets like that. In order to fully appreciate it you must listen to the song from start to finish! Overall, I really enjoy The Forks! They’re playing live all the time, so if you’re traveling or living somewhere where they are playing make sure to stop by and listen!
